Missionaries to Central Asia

I am pleased to report that the last two weeks of February and March on our newly designed web page, we have had downloads and live stream listening from 15 different countries. All Central Asian countries listen, including Pakistan and Iran with over 20 minutes average time on page. This is huge. With the new design, a person can live stream and listen to God’s Word by chapter. This is the safest way for someone in a Muslim country to hear God’s Word. I firmly believe that when a spiritually minded Muslim hears God’s Word in their own language, they will hear the difference between the way the Bible speaks and the Quran’s structure. Please keep this ministry in prayer.

BIO President Visits General MacArthur

The second leg of our (Garvin & Faye Dykes) recent trip took us to the Philippines where we have been many times. However, this was to be a different kind of trip. We were with Chris and Carol Woodley and Nap and Shirley Donado, and souls were saved in both their churches when I preached. Faye also spent time with Carol and the Deaf School.

You will remember though, that last November Typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines with a vengeance, leaving behind death and destruction like I have never witnessed before. The worst of the damage was to Eastern Samar and Leyte Islands, where at least 10,000 people were killed and many thousands left homeless. There was hardly a building of any kind that wasn’t damaged and most were completely destroyed. We went to ground zero, which was Eastern Samar, to the town of General MacArthur. In about half an hour a crowd of over 300 had gathered. We had a service for the adults and children separately with around 100 professions of faith, and then gave them medicine, food and clothing, which had been provided through churches and individuals. There is not a church in the town and we are praying that God will send someone there.

Filipinos are wonderful people and have an indomitable spirit. Our driver said, “We are homeless, but we are not hopeless.” I left with two thoughts: We had done so very little and gratitude to the Lord for his blessings on me.

Missionaries Lonnie and Nodja Blount

Lonnie Blount is ministering in Bancroft, Ontario this week in preparation for a church plant in this predominately Catholic town. The Blounts have been working toward this goal for a long time. We are thrilled to see their diligence and patience finally pay off. In June they will begin Bible studies. These Bible studies will be the basis for a new church. Please pray for this family and the new work.

Lonnie Blount March 2014 Prayer Letter

Dear Pastor and Praying Friends,
We’re rejoicing about our preparation trip! I’ll be in Bancroft, Ontario for almost two weeks in April, which will include preaching for two Sundays. We’re begging God’s power for this trip, especially as I preach on Resurrection Sunday. We’re also asking Him to open doors of soul winning, visitation, encouragement, and preparations in starting the new church. I’ll be ministering and praying with a precious core of God’s people who have for many years been longing for an independent Baptist church in their area. Additionally, we’ve scheduled a meeting with a well informed Canadian Pastor who will be advising us on the legal matters of living and ministering in Canada. I’m prayerfully anticipating a fruitful time in the Lord with these dear Canadians. We appreciate you joining us in praying for this important trip!

Photo of Lonnie Blount and familyExcitement is growing in Bancroft as word spreads about plans to start the first new church. Along with those who have already committed to helping us with this new work, others have expressed a keen interest in being a part as well. Because the closest independent Baptist church is nearly two hours away, these people are particularly hungry for such a church. Please pray that God will continue to prepare the hearts of the thirsting souls of this needy, predominantly Catholic area.

In June we’re planning to start a Bible study, which will become the basis for the new church. Starting a church in Canada can be particularly complex. In fact, it can take upwards to a year to officially register a church with the Canadian government. We’re praying that God will expedite this process. But in the meantime, we’re seeking God’s wisdom in using all possible means to reach souls for His glory. Please pray that God will pave the way for the establishment of His church in His perfect time.

As we make final preparations to go to Canada, we need seven additional supporting churches. Because of the high cost of living in Canada, we definitely could use more support. However, we’re going full steam ahead in our move to Canada and prayerfully trusting God to meet our needs! Please pray that God would lead others to be a part of reaching the unreached of Canada.

We’re grateful for your enduring friendship, faithful prayers, and generous support. It’s our honor and joy to serve the Lord together with you. May He richly bless in His harvest fields.

Because He Is Worthy,

Lonnie Blount

News From Frank Laurent

Missionary to the Deaf of Tanzania

The year 2014 seems to be a spiritual revolution in our deaf church as the church is growing in number with a lot of challenges; yet, we keep pressing toward the mark of the high calling of God! Last December, we celebrated our Annual Christmas Banquet where 80 people attended with Deaf and Hearing. We believe that God uses Deaf to reach Hearing people. Also, God uses Hearing people as well to support their mission program so that Christ may be glorified. No matter being Hearing or Deaf, all we need is to work together as a team for one Master, Jesus Christ.

Missionary Family to Northern Ireland

Jeremy & LaTonya Kilgore & family

Having just celebrated St. Patrick’s Day it is fitting that we introduce our missionaries on deputation for Northern Ireland. The Kilgores were approved last November as missionaries sent out of Eastwood Baptist Church.

Northern Ireland is a country that has a history of civil war, strife and division. The sad fact is that for centuries this hatred and bitterness has been carried out in the name of religion. The Kilgores desire to help bring healing to this land by preaching and living the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. True peace can only be found in Christ.

News From Ron and Sara Smith

Missionaries to the Vietnamese and Cambodians in Cambodia

God willing, Somon a young man whom we have written of before will be moving from Vietnam to work with us sometime before the end of April. Somon trusted in Christ as Savior here in Cambodia in 2008. Just prior to our leaving on furlough in 2010, his family went back to Vietnam where he has been faithful in a church we know about there. We had been praying for someone to help us in the ministry and in reaching people who speak Vietnamese. Somon told us about his desire to help during a visit this past October. Please pray that this will work out in God’s time according to His leading, and will be a true help to our ministry.

Missionary to Ethiopia

Photo of Nader and a national pastor.Nader Baraty

Ethiopia has always been a special place to BIO. Our founder, Dr. Richard Vick, was a missionary to Ethiopia for 11 years. Currently BIO has a missionary couple, several national co-laborers, VICKtory School for the Deaf, and a blind school in Ethiopia. Lord willing, Nader Baraty will join them soon.

Nader, who is Iranian, was saved out of a Muslim influenced home. God has burdened him to reach Muslims for Christ. He was recently approved as a BIO missionary and is working hard to fill his deputation schedule. Please consider having Nadar come and present his ministry in your church.

What Does a Pastor Look for in a Prospective Missionary

What Does a Pastor Look for in a Prospective Missionary

Having been a pastor for 35 years, with missions as the first order of business, let me share with you what I looked for in missionaries, and I believe most other pastors are interested in the same things. The first thing I wanted to see is their Passion. Were they fervent about what God had called them to do? I wasn’t looking for the excitement displayed in emotions or expression, nor how many poor lost souls no one else was reaching where they were going. That is true everywhere on earth! I wanted to see a heart of love for the Savior out of which came a love for lost sinners. If this passion came through on the phone it would probably get them a meeting.

Secondly, I looked at their Presence, only part of which was physical. Of course they should be appropriately dressed, neat and clean, but another element of their presence was personal, by which I mean their demeanor (true humility goes a long way) as well as the impression made by the family unit. Was there obvious love, respect, discipline and cooperation? Was the husband and wife comfortable with each other, and was there the appearance of joy?

Next, I was interested in their Plan. Did they know what they were going to do and how they were going to do it? A man without a plan is a ship adrift at sea, carried about by the winds and waves, finally going nowhere but down.

Finally, I was interested in their Presentation. Here, they needed to convince our church why they, rather than someone else should get a share of our missions dollars. We did not judge them by how extensive their ability in technology was, or how innovative their graphics were, but whether they had applied themselves to make their message understandable. Whatever type presentation a missionary uses it should be neat, correct, and easy to comprehend. If he is not gifted in English grammar and punctuation, he should enlist the help of someone who is. The importance of this is that it reflects on how effective a missionary will be in presenting the Gospel and teaching the Bible on his field.

After all is said and done, every decision should be made in prayer.
