WHO’S IN CONTROL?

By Garvin Dykes, President

Photo of Dr. Garvin DykesSince the fall of Satan, the history of the world has been one of rebellion. Lucifer wanted God’s throne; Adam and Eve wanted to make independent decisions; and every man wants to be the captain of his own fate. While we would applaud William Earnest Henley for his courage against major physical difficulties, we must shrink from his conclusion in his poem Invictus; “It matters not how straight the gate: how charged with the punishment the scroll. I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.” People speak of being a “self-made man,” but if I were them I would be reluctant to take responsibility for such a mess.

David and Drea White

Please pray for David and Drea White. Soon the White family (with their newest addition) will be on their way to Chile. Their goal is to leave for the field in May 2013.

Chile is a country of 17 million people of which 70% are Catholic. Only 18% of Chile is considered Evangelical. There are 24 other people groups in Chile besides the Chileans; these number 1 million in total.

Please pray for the Whites as they wrap up their deputation ministry. A significant amount of support still needs to come. Also pray that God would give them wisdom as they make this transition.

Some of this information came from Joshua Project and from the CIA World Factbook.

Missionary Quote

“Oh, my friends, we are loaded down with countless church activities, while the real work of the church, that of evangelizing the world and winning the lost, is almost entirely neglected.”
—Oswald Smith

We see this desire for independent action in the smallest of children. A mother was recently talking to us about changing her small daughter from one instructor to another, when the child spoke up and said, “Actually, I haven’t fully made that decision yet.” If you are a parent, you have heard, “I can do it myself.” The shoes might be on the wrong feet and the coat inside out, but they prefer that to any parental intervention. While some of this is harmless and a natural learning process, it develops into something much more dangerous. I think I hear the echo of many a Believer saying, “Please God, I’d rather do it myself.” As I have stumbled through life banging into closed doors, reluctant to walk through open ones, and getting myself into the farthest dead end corner of life’s maze, I have finally learned that I really don’t want to control my own life. I need a far steadier hand at the helm and a Captain who knows the sea.

There is too much I can’t control and too great a risk I would mess it up if I could. We pray before every trip we make and ask God to watch over us. We have had many a narrow escape by only a few seconds. One time we pulled off at a rest stop with our camper and there was no place to park, so we didn’t even stop. Two minutes down the road there was a terrible accident that we would have been in the middle of. A recent incident in our lives illustrates the other side of things. This time we didn’t quite escape, but we still know God was watching over us. We were involved in a terrible accident in which our van was totaled, but we came out with minor injuries (abrasions, contusions, and two broken ribs). There were many factors we could not control.

I programmed the pastor’s home address instead of the church address into my GPS or we would not have been where we were. A young lady ran a stop sign and hit us. Two seconds more and We would have been been gone. Two seconds more and she would have been gone. Had I had time, my first instinct would have been to speed up to get out of her way, and if I had done that I would have gotten a direct broadside blow. We had just gotten a van with airbags all around, and every one of them deployed. Had we not had those, instead of a busted ear and a few minutes of unconsciousness, I might not be here, or be seriously injured. I believe there is much more of this kind of watch care that we will never know about this side of heaven.

All of us who are saved, try to control our own lives some of the time, some of us try to control our lives all of the time, and many of us try to control them most of the time. Who is in control of your life? The Psalmist says “Commit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” (Psalm 37:1) We are admonished in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Our “way” is our entire course of life and the Hebrew word “direct” carries the meaning of “pleasant, prosperous, and straight.” Psalms 23 reveals the wisdom of the sheep following the Shepherd. The words of a wise and dear brother who has just gone home to be with the Lord sums up what I am trying to say. The last time we talked to Brother Fred Andrews he said, “I would not have chose to do things this way, but I belong to God; and who am I to tell God what to do with his property?”

When the Temple was consecrated, the priest placed the Ark of the Covenant in the most holy place, pulled out the staves with which it was carried, and backed out. Then the glory of God filled the place so that the priests could not even stand to minister. Let us place God on the throne of our lives and back out. Life is better when He is in control.

Zambia Church Planting

Lifting Up Jesus In Zambia, Africa

Justin, Danielle, Elijah and Jacob Sauder

Justin, Danielle, Elijah and Jacob Sauder

Though currently finishing their deputation Justin and Danielle feel God directing them to begin their ministry in the capital city of Lusaka with a population of 2.2 million people. Many Zambians from all parts of the country are making their way from the bush into the cities looking for work. Therefore, they seek to make disciples in the capital who can help them expand their church planting ministry into more rural locations.

The Sauders know that God is the One who builds the church. Their desire is that God would allow them to plant several churches in Lusaka, in which many young men would be called to the ministry. They will carry the Gospel back to their home villages and plant churches. Zambians reaching Zambians is their goal.

As missionaries, the Sauders know they cannot reach every village in Zambia by themselves, but with God’s help in training nationals they want to see every village in Zambia with a Bible believing Baptist church.

Beginning my senior year in high school, the Lord started placing a desire in my heart for the people of Zambia. During college that desire became stronger and stronger, and I would often find myself reading, talking to people, and looking at pictures of that area. After marrying my wife, I knew that the Lord may be directing us to those people, so my wife and I took a five week survey trip to Zambia to confirm if that was the Lord’s will for us. For the following three years, my wife and I prayed and we have no doubts that, that is where he wants us to serve in the future.

We believe God desires to manifest His glory in Zambia through the planting of indigenous, self-supporting, self-governing, self-propagating churches as we see modeled in Acts 14:21-23.

Pray for this couple and their children as they begin their ministry in Zambia. They joined BIO in 2010 and are scheduled to go to the field in the summer of 2013. You can read more about their ministry at their website.

SMART Conference in Progress

Terry Childers TeachingBro. Terry Childers is currently conducting a SMART Conference session at Faith Baptist Church in Jefferson City, Tennessee. This is in conjunction with the mission conference at the church. Each day of the conference Bro. Childers has classes scheduled for the missionaries and any church members who would like to participate.

The first two days of this conference were on basic vehicle maintenance and trouble shooting. Bro. Childers is teaching these classes himself. During the Saturday session the attendees will learn CPR from a certified CPR instructor in the church.

If your church would like to schedule a SMART Conference during your missions conference, please contact SMARTraining to get more information. These classes can help your church members become more involved in the conference by allowing them to teach and participate in the classes with the missionaries.

Ethiopia Report

By David Peach, Director of Deaf Ministries

David Peach, Director of Deaf MinistriesIn December I was privileged to visit the country of Ethiopia in East Africa and see some dear friends. Ethiopia is a foundational country for BIO. Many of the ministries we are involved with in Ethiopia predate even the existence of the mission board. Therefore, it was a great honor for me to see these ministries that I previously had only heard about.

I preached ten times while in Ethiopia. Most of those times were for Bro. Bizuayehu in the Ebenezer Baptist Church of the Deaf. There were two deaf teenagers saved during one of the services. God also allowed me to see a hearing man in his twenties accept the Lord at another church. The privilege of preaching and seeing people saved was mine because of the great teaching and preaching by the faithful pastors and church workers.

The Sykes Family

Jason and Sarah Sykes

Jason and Sarah Sykes

Please pray for Jason and Sarah Sykes. They have recently ended their deputation ministry and have moved to Costa Rica for language school.

Venezuela has a population of 28 million of which 96% are Catholic according to the CIA World Factbook. This population of 28 million can be broken down into 64 people groups; of these, four are categorized as least reached according to Joshua Project.

Please pray, as well, for the current political situation in Venezuela along the lines of 1 Timothy 2:2, “For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”

Missionary Quote

“We’re cloistered in climate-controlled cathedrals, feasting while billions can’t even find a drop of water. We do not well!” – David Hosaflook.

Following is a short report about the people and ministries I visited. I want to encourage you to pray for them. They are people of integrity who are highly respected by their fellow ministers and who have a good reputation among the people they are trying with to reach for the Lord.

Bizuayehu Assefa

Bro. Bizuayehu is a dear servant of the Lord. He and his wife are both Deaf and have served in ministry for more than twenty years. Besides regular church services, Bro. Bizuayehu has training classes in his church during the week for those who want to learn more about the Bible and how they can serve God better. His church building, which is way too small for the number of people he serves, hosts some classes for the Bible college ministry of Berhanu Yoseph.

Tsehai, Bro. Bizuayehu’s wife, does a wonderful job with organizing the special music in the church. She also teaches sign language classes so that they can reach out to a broader community. She is a great cook and a good mother to their three godly children.

Gomeju Tafesse – VICKtory School

Sister Gomeju hosted me in her house for the nineteen days that I was there. She was gracious and generous with her resources. She prepared good safe meals for me.

Gomeju is the Director of the VICKtory School for the Deaf that many of you are involved with either through special offerings or children’s sponsorships. She was excited to show me the property where the new school building is being constructed. The school is growing and in need of the new facilities. With the added space they will be better able to educate the children. Bro. Bizuayehu teaches a weekly Bible class at the school.

Berhanu Yoseph

Though Sister Gomeju was the host for my stay, Bro. Berhanu gave much of his time to help me get involved in various church programs and special events. He opened up opportunities for me to preach in some of the special meetings. Berhanu also took me to visit churches where God is doing a great work outside the city of Addis Ababa. Though Berhanu is one of the men I had met previous to going to Ethiopia, he has become a much closer friend because of our time together.

Tesfaye Gosa

Pastor Tesfaye is a man I had heard much about and was blessed to finally meet. He has faithfully preached God’s Word for many years even though he is blind and cannot read the Bible for himself. He has much of it memorized which helps him as he studies for his messages. It was an honor to spend time in prayer with this man who loves our Lord deeply.

Bekele Denboba

Though he is dealing with difficult medical problems related to his heart, Bro. Bekele was a joy to meet. I did not preach in a regular church service for him, but I did teach a Bible college class that his church hosts weekly. The five of us men (Bizuayehu, Berhanu, Tesfaye, Bekele and I) met weekly on Mondays to pray; something this group has done for more than twelve years. I look forward to continuing to build a strong relationship with Bro. Bekele. Pray that God would give healing to his body and give him many more years of service if that be His will.

I enjoyed the country, the food and the coffee. But what I appreciated most about the trip was meeting these five people (and their families) and knowing that they are doing a great work for the Lord. These are quality men and ministries. Each of these five represent many Ethiopians, Deaf and hearing, who will one day stand in the presence of the Lord. They are worthy of your prayers and support.
